I am directed by Mr. Secretary amberlain to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 28th ultimo, in which you ask Goat Soc Treasury authority may be given to you, to enable you tu obtain the Superannuation Gratuity of the Postal Society to which you belong

Mr. Chamberlain regrets that he is unable to concur in your view of your position in regard to the Bome Postal Service, inasmuch as you are not now being superannuated from that service,nor retired with a pension but transferred to the ser- vice of the Government of Hong Kong, while retain- ing your clain to pension in respect to your home service, provided that you ultimately retire from the Bong Kong service under circumstances which would entitle you to a pension if you had continu-

j ed in the Home Service. I am to add with reference to the latter part of your letter that Mr. Chamber 1ain is prepared to authorise the Crown Agents to make you an advance on your Hong Kong salary to an amount not exceeding one month's pay on your personal security or a somewhat larger amount on the security of yourself and one other responsible
